WELCOME TO CHARLES NITTERHOUSE POST 1599

Our Mission Support our Veterans

The VFW traces it's roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.
In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations that would eventually become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

OUR MISSION
To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.

OUR VISION
Ensure that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements, and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country.

OUR CORE VALUES
Always put the interests of our members first.
Treat donors as partners in our cause
Promote Patriotism
Honor military service
Ensure the car of veterans and their families
Serve our communities
Promote a positive image of the VFW
Respect the diversity of veteran opinions

Dear Members,

I regret to inform you that we are unable to continue our monetary donations due to a recent investigation by the Liquor Control Enforcement (LCE) that found us to be non-compliant regarding the number of fish bowls we are allowed to operate. Unfortunately, exceeding the limit has led to possible revocation of our small games of chance license, pending a mandate by an administrative law judge hearing.

This situation deeply saddens me, as we have relied on the revenue generated to support numerous community entities. Over the years, I have formed close connections with many of you, and I want to express my sincere apologies for the hardship this situation may cause.

Our only hope for a resolution lies in legislative action to increase the payout limits. It is frustrating to see that, unlike many other states, Pennsylvania does not permit unlimited fish bowls with a flat fee tax, which would allow us to continue operating successfully. This change would benefit our community, keep jobs intact, and contribute substantial funds to Harrisburg while helping local organizations that rely on our support.

We have been running our operations in good faith for nearly 100 years without any adverse effects—quite the opposite, in fact. Thousands of people have benefited from the donations we’ve made. We fully understand that laws are necessary to maintain order and protect the safety of citizens. However, in this case, the law seems to favor large casinos at the expense of local, small-scale efforts that do immense good for the community.

We are not asking for anyone to disregard the law, but we do believe that the positive impact of our work should be considered when evaluating the rules that govern us. It is time for us, as a community, to advocate for a change that helps the "little guy” and ensures that our support for local entities—who do not receive state or federal funding—can continue.

I encourage you to join us in this fight. Let’s work together to make our voices heard! We have included contact information for our state and local legislators—let’s ring their phones off the hook and make sure our concerns are addressed before it’s too late.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Don Hershey
